Craig,

>From a Google search of
"Seagate" + "USB" + "external drive" + "protected files"
which produced forty-three results (some but NOT all checked by yours
truly), although the situation below is not exactly what you have described,
it seems comparable and just might help.

>From a thread starting at
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/WinXP/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
/2005-01/19407.html
as follows:
"I use an external hard drive to back up data from my pc which is password
protected. The PC is now out for repairs and I tried to access the files in
the hard drive using another PC, but I can not. Is there any way to recover
the files? I fear that if the manufacturer reinstalls my OS then all the
data will be lost. "

First reply at
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/WinXP/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
/2005-01/19506.html
"What do you mean password protected? XP doesn't protect files and folders
using a password - it uses permissions. Do you mean the login account has a
password or did you install a third party program that password protects
files and folders? If the former then it's an issue of taking ownership. In
Start | Help and Support type ownership or see this article:
HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308421

Next at
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/WinXP/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
/2005-01/19518.html
"It was the former. I tried following the instructions as provided in the
link. However, there was no 'security' tab available; the only tabs that
were present were 'general', 'sharing and 'customize'."

And finally at
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/WinXP/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
/2005-01/19533.html
"Done! Forgot to see the two magic words: "safe mode"! Thanks a lot!"

End of copied and pasted thread.

Good luck.

Merna

Craig,

my guess is that the files are lost, but I'm only guessing.

See http://www.google.com/search?hl=de&q=recover+ntfs+encrypted+files
