Had you rebooted?  If so, the explanation may be simple.

On reboot, if XP finds that the system does not boot properly, it will 
"self-heal" by reverting automatically to a previously backed-up registry 
or other system files.

In so doing, other minor faults may become fixed as a result.

All this is done invisibly to produce your miracle.

XP and Vista are remarkably self-healing---that is one reason why they are 
much more robust than previous systems.

It also partly explains why, when things start to get horrible, it's always 
a good idea to reboot, before the system gets into such a tangle that it 
can't fix itself.

If you hadn't rebooted, then perhaps indeed it is a miracle.
