Windows so-called MediaPlayer is the worst mediaplayer ever invented. It
won't play anything much other than the proprietary Microsoft .wmv format.
And it is virtually function-less compared with just about any other
player, of which there are many. It has a nice interface, and may be OK for
audio ripping, but that's about it.
My first choice is usually either WinDVD, PowerDVD, or Nero Showtime, one
of which usually comes with DVD burners. Check your DVD burner disk for
player choices.
For freeware, my choices in the following order are:
Gom (most functions), VLC (most codecs), JetPlayer. All are very versatile
and will self-install many codecs. If Gom can't find the appropriate codec
for a particular video file, it will run an automatic web search for it and
offer to download and install it.
Any of these will play standard DVD's just fine.
