Windows so-called MediaPlayer is the worst mediaplayer ever invented. It 
won't play anything much other than the proprietary Microsoft .wmv format. 
And it is virtually function-less compared with just about any other 
player, of which there are many. It has a nice interface, and may be OK for 
audio ripping, but that's about it.

My first choice is usually either WinDVD, PowerDVD, or Nero Showtime, one 
of which usually comes with  DVD burners. Check your DVD burner disk for 
player choices.

For freeware, my choices in the following order are:
Gom (most functions), VLC (most codecs), JetPlayer. All are very versatile 
and will self-install many codecs. If Gom can't find the appropriate codec 
for a particular video file, it will run an automatic web search for it and 
offer to download and install it.

Any of these will play standard DVD's just fine.
