I downloaded adn installed GOM
  WMP provides no UnInstaller.

  I went to add/delete programs.
Tried to get rid of WMP.
Says it would rollback to previous version.
  ggggrrrrraaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh !!!
OK, I'll take that, hoping the new one is then gone,
then maybe delete the old version?
  Said it would reboot. Didn't.

Now I still find Windows Media Format 11 Runtime
in the list under Add/delete programs. Do I delete that?

Plugged in DVD. Gave the option to run with GOM
GOM says it needs a codec and went to
  http://%22http//www.gomplayer.com/codec/search.html?type=0&guid={E06D8026-DB46-11CF-B4D1-00805F6CBBEA}"
and I get message MSIE cannot display the webpage.

what next? maybe try a different DVD player?

I think I'll kick off an OpenOffice download and go have breakfast.

Windows so-called MediaPlayer is the worst mediaplayer ever invented. It
won't play anything much other than the proprietary Microsoft .wmv format.
And it is virtually function-less compared with just about any other
player, of which there are many. It has a nice interface, and may be OK for
audio ripping, but that's about it.

My first choice is usually either WinDVD, PowerDVD, or Nero Showtime, one
of which usually comes with DVD burners. Check your DVD burner disk for
player choices.

For freeware, my choices in the following order are:
Gom (most functions), VLC (most codecs), JetPlayer. All are very versatile
and will self-install many codecs. If Gom can't find the appropriate codec
for a particular video file, it will run an automatic web search for it and
offer to download and install it.

Any of these will play standard DVD's just fine.
