Would it get as far as the Boot Menu if the MBR is blown? Could I run that 
command from the BartPE disk? (If I can get it to load). That's a handy hint.

It won't even open in Safe Mode, whichever option they've tried. F8 gets it 
into the Boot Menu OK.  Safe Mode just starts loading the drivers etc, then 
pauses for a while, shuts down and loops back to reboot.

I suspect faulty RAM, or a failed fan as the primary suspects. It's an old 
computer, so could be anything.

With a bit of luck, the data might be on a partition separate from the OS, 
but I'm not counting on it.

I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow, and was hoping I might, if 
necessary, be able to rescue the data to CD's without going thru the hoops 
of a second HD etc.
