TSGL: Rescue data

No, you're probably right that it wouldn't even get to the boot menu. But
I'm a little confused about drivers loading when you go to Safe Mode. When I
select "command prompt only" from the Safe Mode menu, nothing loads except a
version of NTDOS or something like that.
If you don't want to go the external hard drive route, you might consider
running Ubuntu from a thumb drive. Follow this link:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/01/25/usb-x-ubuntu-610/ to get info on
Ubuntu on a 1 GB thumb. While I can't swear that THIS implementation
includes the burning software, Ubuntu (as it's described in this set of
instructions) DOES burn CDs, so it's probable that you could burn a CD.
However, that raises another question. If you've got a 1 GB thumb drive,
that's larger than any CD and it (should) show up as a valid drive when
you're running BART PE or most of the other recovery tools. Maybe the
easiest way is to run the recovery tool, copy to the thumb drive, and, if
there is too much, move the files from the thumb to another system until you
have it all. Of course if you've invested in a 2 GB (I've recently seen 64
GB drives advertised at Fry's, so larger thumbs are becoming common) then
you've probably got more than enough space.

Would it get as far as the Boot Menu if the MBR is blown? Could I run that
command from the BartPE disk? (If I can get it to load). That's a handy
hint.
It won't even open in Safe Mode, whichever option they've tried. F8 gets it
into the Boot Menu OK. Safe Mode just starts loading the drivers etc, then
pauses for a while, shuts down and loops back to reboot.
I suspect faulty RAM, or a failed fan as the primary suspects. It's an old
computer, so could be anything.
With a bit of luck, the data might be on a partition separate from the OS,
but I'm not counting on it.
I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow, and was hoping I might, if
necessary, be able to rescue the data to CD's without going thru the hoops
of a second HD etc.
