Good advice from H. Davis.
You seem to be running enough RAM for XP, but another 512 MB or more might
help, even if you don't think it's taking all of your original memory ... it
may be using some of your page file for memory, and that generally slows
down everything.
But your constant crashes bother me. There can be many reasons for this, but
the two most obvious are defective RAM, that which is already in your
computer, and or a defective Video Card or Video Driver. And if your Video
Card's memory is "integrated", that is the card uses memory from the
motherboard, itself, that could also be a problem.
I think the first thing I would do is to go to the Video Cards Manufacture's
web page, probably http://nvidia.com or http://ati.amd.com and download the
latest driver for your card. Be sure to read the installation instructions
carefully as there can be problems with some cards on some operating systems
if the instructions are not followed exactly. DO NOT ASSUME THAT YOU'VE
DOWNLOADED AND INSTALLED LOTS AND LOTS OF PROGRAMS AND THAT YOU KNOW HOW TO
INSTALL THESE DRIVERS WITHOUT READING THE INSTRUCTIONS. I ran into that
problem just last week and caused myself several hours of grief.
If that doesn't work, the next thing I would do is to remove the original
video card and try another. Your video card is a part of the motherboard?
You may have to disable it or set the new card as the default. No access to
another card? Check with friends, particularly if they are gamers. Gamers
will always have extra cards around the house.
And at some point, if the problem doesn't seem to be from the Video Card or
Driver, you should test your memory. There are several good memory testing
softwares available. A quick search at http://download.com found 71, some
free, some not. And I'm sure some are excellent, others not so excellent.
But read the reviews. They'll give you a pretty good idea. But, personally,
I'd pull out my copy of "The Ultimate Boot CD", now in version 4.1.1. It is
free and can be downloaded from http://ultimatebootcd.com and includes lots
and lots of free tools including a memory tester. You will have to make the
CD yourself. When you boot from it, it will boot you into DOS. However,
knowledge of DOS is not required to use the CD. The test should probably be
run overnight when you don't need your computer for anything else.
I wish you well.

Hi,
WinXP Pro, version 2002
SP2
AMD Athlon 64 processor
3200+
2.01GHz
1GB RAM
I'm running Adobe Premiere 6.5, which, admittedly, can be quite a memory
hog.
I'm using Avisynth scripts to import footage into P6.5, and then use
virtual clips (which is easier on Premiere altogether, since Avisynth
scripting wasn't really designed to use it the way I'm using it, but
even when I break the one big project down into little projects that
Premiere should be able to handle, I'm still getting lots of crashes,
i.e., 20 this evening alone).
I'm constantly crashing. I don't reach the GB of RAM or anything, but
I'm looking for a way to clean out my task manager in order to run as
little as possible while I'm running Premiere. With no programs running
(of my own accord), I still have 24-25 processes going! Can someone
help me here?
I am running, when nothing else is running:
avgcc.exe
nvsvc32.exe
avgemc.exe
avgamsvr.exe
spoolsv.exe
explorer.exe
svchost.exe X5 (sometimes 4, sometimes 6--what *is* that anyway?)
lsass.exe
services.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
smss.exe
ctfmon.exe
jusched.exe
rundll32.exe
alg.exe
System
System Idle Process
I remember, way back in the dark ages of Win2k and Win98, I could strip
down my processes to run just "scan registry," systray and my AV, and
I'd have 95% resources free. Can I do something like that with WinXP
Pro SP2?
I've defragged and reinstalled and actually have run nothing except my
AV when I'm using Premiere, I think, but... I know just enough to be
dangerous. Help?
Can I give y'all any more info?
Thanks in advance,
Lum

Lum,
Looks like the others may not have an answer for you, and I, too, cannot
give you a specific answer.
However, since I knew nothing about Premier 6.5, I did a little research and
found that it was an expensive Adobe application for editing video and other
purposes. Adobe no longer supports it (probably because of the horrible
reviews on it tbat I saw), and because of problems like your friend has.
Frankly, from what I read of Premier, your friend may be better off using
another software, but since I don't know his needs and what is available,
Premier may be necessary.
That said, I found no solutions for the problem. What I did find was a
Microsoft webpage that indicated that Premier 6.5 is compatible with XP
Service Pack 2. So I do have a suggestion that may work, though it will be a
pain in the bottom ... Uninstall Premier. Remove all updates including SP2.
Reinstall SP2. Reinstall Premier. Check that it works. If it does, install
each update not installed, one by one, and check to see if it breaks
Premier. If it does not, leave it. If it does, remove it.
I sure hope someone here has a better answer than mine. Good luck to your
friend.

Subject: TSGL: I need to know which updates to uninstall!
Hi y'all!
I remember my experience with this. I do. But nothing specific. One of
my friends is using Premiere 6.5 on WinXP Pro SP2. He just rebuilt his
computer, has 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 video card, ASUS P5KE
motherboard, Pentium Quad chip. He has run all of the updates from
Microsoft (sadly). Yes, everything he owns is legally his. :)
He cannot open the program. Here's his email to me:
/When I start up Premiere, the program window opens and starts
"initializing" for approximately 1.5 seconds before I get the basic
Windows error of (to paraphrase) "this program has suffered an error and
needs to close, would you like to send an error report", etc etc. No
specific error, nothing to guide me in the direction of fixing it. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled Premiere at least five times now (I've
lost count). I've tried to load it no fewer than three times each
install just in case it's finicky. I usually restarted after
installation, but not always. (I've tried on a clean boot many times.) I
did a full "typical" install the very first time, then after that I just
did a custom and left out the stuff I didn't need like Quicktime (again)
and the Real Media thing (eww). I only checked the first four boxes of
the 8. (I had the audio filters checked for awhile and kept getting an
error message on install that I thought was the reason the whole thing
would crash. Well, I don't get that error anymore after unchecking the
box, and it's still not fixed.)
/I remember that, a couple of years ago, I had this same issue, and one
of y'all told me that there were specific XP updates that rendered
Premiere 6.5 unstable, and for me to uninstall those specific updates
(which started with a "K," IIRC). I did just that, and everything was
copacetic. Does anyone remember this? Or can you tell me where to look
to find that list of updates?
Thanks in advance,
Luminosity
