TSGL: Bamboozled

Hi guys
I have an Acer Aspire 3000 laptop with a problem that has me stumped.

When booting up normally into Windows XP, as soon as the user selection menu
appears, the mousepad stops working and the keyboard takes 3 seconds for
every keypress to register. In addition, the laptop freezes intermittantly
at random times and always freezes when the Turn Off button is clicked to
shutdown. The on/off button stops working at this point which results in
having to disconnect the power cord and battery in order to shutdown the
laptop.

Windows has been reinstalled afresh and all drivers updated but the problem
persists. However, a USB keyboard and mouse work fine, and when the laptop
is booted into SafeMode, everything functions normally.
Any ideas anyone?
