Sam,

question is, what did you do before this started, or what did your machine 
do on it's own, like, say, fetching an automated software update.

Just read this in Windows secrets (paid content):
"Sometimes, your security app is the problem

In the past two weeks, two antivirus vendors have announced flawed updates. 
Refreshes of two of my favorite security programs - NOD32 from Eset and 
Trend Micro's AntiVirus - caused problems ..."

Do you run any of these applications?
Generally, you could deactivate most of what's running on your machine that 
isn't part of the basic system. If the problem goes away, restart each of 
them one at a time, till you get that same error.
